Sales of big brand soft drinks were being rationed last night by a leading supermarket as the CO2 crisis escalated. Asda 's decision to limit sales came as food industry leaders warned of threats to supplies of beer, cider, fresh meat, bagged salads and bakery products. Pubs, corner shops and restaurants have run out of some top beer and cider brands on what is expected to be one of their busiest weekends of the year. The Food and Drink Federation, which speaks for manufacturers, advised that some lines of fresh chicken, pork and bacon are likely to disappear from supermarket shelves. Asda customers trying to stock up on soft drinks to see them through the heatwave and World Cup parties were blocked from buying any more than six bottles or multipacks on its website.

Manufacturers of soft drinks containing more than 5g of sugar per ml will pay a levy of 18p a litre to the Treasury, or 24p a litre if the sugar content is over 8g per ml, with the cost passed on to retailers and customers. The Government and health campaigners hope the higher prices will put consumers off buying the sugariest drinks, and lead to a significant decline in obesity. Original Pepsi and Coca-Cola Classic are two examples of formulations remaining intact due to customer demand. They therefore face the new levy, with the cost of a ml can of the original Coca-Cola, containing around seven teaspoons of sugar, likely to rise by around 8p plus VAT.

Why more than 60 diners fell ill after eating at this pub. Wetherspoon chairman Tim Martin said prices on soft drinks in pubs would increase by about 10p as a result of the tax. Tesco has reformulated all of its own-label soft drinks to come in below the threshold for the levy, claiming the changes have cut more than nine billion calories from customers' diets every year, as have Morrisons, Asda and The Co-op.

A Co-op spokeswoman said: A Coca-Cola Great Britain spokeswoman said: Consumers tell us not to change it and we believe they should be able to choose a Coca-Cola Classic if that's the drink they want. Barr said: The vast majority of our drinkers want to consume less sugar so that's what we're now offering.

However the British Soft Drinks Association said there was no evidence to suggest that a tax of this sort would have a meaningful impact on obesity. Coca-Cola Great Britain said: As that has happened, obesity rates have continued to rise. Ben Reynolds, deputy chief executive at the food and farming charity Sustain, said: Caroline Cerny, of the Obesity Health Alliance, a coalition of more than 40 organisations, said: More work could also be done to help manufacturers reduce the sweetness of drinks as well as the sugar content, to help "change" palettes and get people used to a less sugary diet, Ms Cerny said.

Ed Morrow, a spokesman for the Royal Society for Public Health, said the introduction of the sugar tax was "just a part of the overall picture". He added: Better regulation to combat the advertising of high fat, salt or sugar foods has been "sorely lacking" in strategy, Mr Morrow said. Video Loading Video Unavailable. Major supermarkets warn customers they will limit sales of beer, cider and fresh meat as carbon dioxide supplies run low. One of the country's biggest supermarkets says it will limit the sale of fizzy drinks to customers amid the UK's CO2 shortage. Asda has imposed a cap of six bottles and multipacks of soft drinks for customers online and in store, prompting an angry backlash on social media, The Mirror reports. The supermarket giant has defended the move however, saying: Iceland and Lidl have also reported a shortage of carbonated beverages as production by top brands fell due to concerns over supply.

Asda says the ads were meant to draw attention to the Asda Price Guarantee, which promises to refund the difference if prices are found to be lower in rival supermarkets.

Between December and March, Watchdog discovered 27 instances where a "rollback" on Asda's website was actually a price increase, although the original lower price was usually visible as well. Asda admitted "a glitch in our online system which thankfully we have now put right. The bug meant that the rollback flag stayed online for up to 24 hours after the price of certain products had moved back up - which clearly shouldn't happen".

In terms of global domination, Coca-Cola is definitely the real thing. Even if you want to, it may be impossible to shake off the influence of this corporate behemoth. Using MRI brain scans, they found that, in blind tests, people focused solely on flavour. However, when the subjects knew they were drinking Coke, that information triggered sophisticated brain activity involving memory. This poses a tantalising possibility: Yet some analysts still insist that Coca-Cola is finally going flat.
